New study to look at small business management skills

By Michelle Collins |

TORONTO - A new study looking at the management skills entrepreneurs need for growth is about to get under way. The study will build upon a report entitled "Path to Prosperity" published last year by the RBC Financial Group (RBC), Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

Path to Prosperity showed that while Canada and the U.S. are comparable in business creation Canada falls behind in it's ability to grow these businesses beyond the small and medium sized stages. The first study also found that management and leadership skills are among the barriers to growth for SME's.

The second study will address these management skills and design an action plan to overcome these barriers. A leadership model will also be developed using case studies to uncover best practices. The study will also address how SME's can use these skills to better compete, particularly enterprises seeking higher-risk debt or venture capital.

The Queen's Centre for Enterprise Development (QCED) will lead the study with support from RBC and the CME. Results will be published in October.
