New partnership in Alberta formed to eliminate cross-border fraud

CALGARY - Law authorities in both Canada and the U.S. have joined forces to form The Alberta Partnership Against Cross-Border Fraud. The organization has been formed to identify fraudulent and misleading marketing schemes on both sides of the border. Partners in the initiative include The Competition Bureau, federal and local police authorities, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
Each member of the initiative will able to share information and lend support for law enforcement. In other words, if a telemarketing scam was operating in Alberta and targeting people in the U.S., police officers in both countries could gather evidence to support the case against these Canadians.
This latest partnership joins a growing list of similar organizations which include the Toronto Strategic Partnership, and Projects Colt and Emptor.
"Partnerships have proven to be effective in combatting deceptive telemarketing and other fraudulent scams that transcend borders," said Raymond Pierce, Deputy Commissioner of Competition. "With this newest partnership, we want to ensure that Alberta does not become a safe-haven for criminal organizations involved in deceptive or fraudulent cross-border scams."
