SK - BSE Support Programs End July 20th

By CO Staff @canadaone |

Two programs, the Canada-Saskatchewan Feeder Calf Set Aside Program and the Canada Saskatchewan Fed Cattle Set Aside Program, will end effective July 20, 2005 as the US border opens up to Canadian cattle imports for cattle less than 30 months of age.

"We supported our livestock producers during the border closure, while at the same time we sought and implemented long-term solutions to the BSE crisis," Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said. "We remain committed to a growing, prosperous and sustainable livestock industry in Saskatchewan."

While some Canadian cattle can now be exported to the US the border status could change as R-Calf United Stock Growers of America is seeking a permanent injunction on imports of Canadian cattle and boneless boxed beef from Canadian cattle less than 30 months of age. A U.S. District Court Judge in Montana will begin to hear this application on July 27th, 2005.

Wartman said that further announcements will be made if there is a border status change.
