SK: Minimum wage on the rise

By CO Staff @canadaone |

Effective January 1, 2008 minimum wage rose to $8.25, with further increases scheduled for May 1, 2008 ($8.60) and May 1, 2009 ($9.25).

In 2010 an adjustment will be made to minimum wage to bring it to the Low Income Cut-off (LICO). LICO is the statistical measure used by Statistics Canada which measures the income thresholds below which Canadians likely devote a larger share of income than average to the necessities of food, shelter and clothing.

The province also plans to introduce legislation that will permit the minimum wage to be indexed to the consumer price index in future years. If passed, indexing will begin in 2010 with increases occuring on May 1 each year.

"Raising the minimum wage is one way low-income individuals and families will have a better standard of living and an opportunity to build a better future," Labour Minister David Forbes said. "As our economy grows and prospers it is important that all Saskatchewan residents benefit."

There are approximately 12,400 minimum wage earners in Saskatchewan.
