Canadians 3rd most active social media users worldwide

Sixty five per cent of the 1.1 billion people who accessed the Internet in May 2009 visited at least one social networking site, says a new study from comScore.

Russians were the most engaged social media users worldwide, spending an average of 6.6 hours on social networking sites per visitor and viewing 1,307 pages per visitor during the month.

Of the 40 individual countries represented in the study Brazil had the second highest activity (6.3 hours per visitor) while Canada ranked third (5.6 hours per visitor).

Interestingly, there is not a direct correlation between the time spent online and the number of pages viewed. For example, Canadians averaged 5.6 hours and 649 pages per visitor yet Spain, which ranked 5th in the survey, logged less time (5.3 hours) but higher page views (968 pages) per visitor. The number of page views per visitor on social media sites was significantly higher in Russian, Brazil, Spain and Finland compared to other countries.
