Complaining made easier - thanks to federal government

OTTAWA - Got a complaint against a company or agency? If you have, the federal government wants to help you get some action with its new Complaint Courier, a service available on the Canadian Consumer Information Gateway website.

Now, instead of having to deal with several levels of government, complainants are given an assessment tool, outlines of consumers' rights and responsibilities and a 'writing wizard' to help them write more effective letters. Information and advice on resolving disputes, including the use of small claims courts, will also be available.

"Complaint Courier," says Industry Minister Allan Rock, "will make the complaint-filing process easier by offering advice on how to evaluate and prepare a complaint and will forward the complaint to the appropriate agency."

Those with complaints involving the travel, financial services and collection industries will be able to fill out a standardized report and have it sent to the appropriate agency from the site.

More than 35 national and 70 provincial or territorial non-government partners have their consumer information on the site, including The Canadian Toy Testing Council, Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan and the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus. The number of government and non-government sources represented now totals more than 400.
