Help for Saskatchewan farmers

REGINA - In light of the drought conditions facing the province's livestock and produce aid from both the private and public sector is being made available.

Forage Rainfall Crop Insurance Program

Crop farmers who are insured under this program are making claims that total $6.1 million so far. Farmers insured under this program had the option of buying coverage based on the current year's actual rainfall as compared to an average annual rainfall.

The $6.1 million in claims payouts is more than three and a half times greater than the $1.7 million paid in premiums. To make up the difference both the federal and provincial governments have contributed $2.9 million to the program, with the remaining $1.5 million shortfall coming out of the Crop Insurance reserves.

Livestock aid and loans

Rainfall information will also be used to determine how the $70 million provided by the province for drought relief will be divided up among livestock farmers. Depending on the severity of drought, farmers are entitled to $12 to $25 per breeding animal under the herd retention grant program.

Farmers who want to keep their livestock can apply for the drought loan program, where they can get a $50 loan per breeding animal. A review committee will be formed to assess further drought needs.

Herd retention forms will be available August 20 from the Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Rural Service Centre, or by calling 1-877-874-5365. Forms are also available online at www.agr.gov.sk.ca.

Livestock drought program forms will be available at participating banks and credit unions on August 26. Application deadlines for each program is December 31, 2002.
