New legislation allows professionals to operate as corporations

SASKATCHEWAN - New legislation will allow dentists, optometrists, and chiropractors to run practices as corporations under The Professional Corporations Act. The legislation will also apply to chartered accountants and lawyers.

"Professionals will be able to take advantage of incorporating just like other small businesses," Justice Minister Chris Axworthy said. "Allowing Saskatchewan professionals the same tax advantages as their counterparts in other provinces reflects the government's commitment to a competitive business environment."

Clients and patients who use these services will continue to be protected by the rules and regulations of the respective professional association. Professionals who decide to incorporate will still be subject to discipline by their governing association.

The province has already put legislation in place that allows other professionals such as physicians, pharmacists, and denturists to incorporate.

Those wishing to incorporate will be administered an application through their governing association. Other issues such as bylaws, regulation of names and advertising will also be made available through these same organizations.
