Saskatchewan launches new work safety programs

REGINA - In an effort to prevent workplace illness and injury, WorkSafe Saskatchewan is joining forces with other organizations and agencies in the province to share programming, education, and training resources. The Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board (WCB) and Saskatchewan Labour are overseeing the new program.

"WorkSafe Saskatchewan's goal is to foster a culture of 'safety and prevention first in Saskatchewan workplaces'," Labour Minister and Minister Responsible for the Workers' Compensation Board Deb Higgins said. She also feels that the new program will provide a one-stop shop for people looking for health and safety information.

Higgins has already introduced the first project of the joint venture, a CD-ROM with health and safety information. The program has also compiled 600 resources online at www.worksafesask.ca. Other plans include a campaign targeted at accident prevention in high-risk industries.

"Successful safety programs depend upon providing people with proper information, skills development, tools and on-going support," WCB Chairman John Solomon said. "The challenge for those of us with a stake in workplace injury prevention is to transform the vast store of existing and emerging occupational health, safety and prevention research into practical and applicable tools and make them readily available."
