New report on air travel issues
Recommendations include:
- Active government involvement in economic development. This includes working with stakeholders to analyze industry trends.
- Airport authorities and airlines should be able to negotiate exit provisions
- Adopting and "Open Skies Plus" agreement that would provide unlimited rights between Canada and the US
- Canceling the Air Travellers Security Charge, instead the money should come from taxes
- Canceling planned airport rent increases and reducing current rental rates
- Introducing government policies that allow for necessary aviation data to be gathered in a timely and cost-effective manner
In addition to these recommendations the organizations have also formed three separate task forces to address the issues of air travel tourism. The task forces are:
- Economic and Financial Task Force which will address issues involving airline viability, sustainability, pricing and surcharges
- Competitiveness and Barriers to Service Task Force that will look at competition issues, essential services, and community development
- Air Policy and Communications Task Force will examine areas that involve federal government policies and vision, multi-stakeholder communication and data sharing.
