PEI plans to launch itself into cyberspace -- again

CHARLOTTETOWN - Prince Edward Island is to relaunch itself into cyberspace by reintroducing its Web Presence Program, originally initiated in 2000 to help island businesses build their own websites.

During the six months the program lasted in 2000, 232 applications were approved and $55,000 worth of government assistance provided.

"More and more Prince Edward Island companies are establishing websites and promoting themselves to a broader audience," said Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie. "This indicates that our business community is in tune with the demands of today's market.

"Despite these strides, it's important that even more island companies consider the value of having a web presence. This is particularly crucial as we move into more export markets."

Under the reintroduced program -- open to all PEI businesses and industry associations without a website -- approved companies can receive 40 per cent of their website costs, up to a maximum of $500.
