Competition Bureau fines U.S. company
Operating in British Columbia as Western Phone Directories, the company was reported by business owners in Kamloops and the Okanagan Valley for failing to meet publication dates, to deliver the ordered number of copies and for not getting directories to the specified geographic locations.
"Small and medium enterprises in particular have tight advertising budgets and they need to realize value for every dollar they spend on advertising," said Raymond Pierce, Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Fair Business Practices Branch. "The measures outlined in the consent order will benefit consumers and businesses alike in British Columbia."
Phone Directories Company Inc. has agreed not to make false claims or misrepresentations, including Internet mailings, regarding publication and delivery dates and the number of directories distributed to specified locations for a period of 10 years.
The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency responsible for ensuring a competitive economy, low prices, product choice and quality service.
