Northern Provinces extend shared agreement

NUNAVUT - Kelvin Ng, the Minister responsible for the Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) announced earlier this week that the province is extending it's shared arrangement with the Northwest Territories (NWT).

The agreement was signed by Ng and Territories Minister responsible for WCB Joe Handley allowing the WCB to continue servicing both provinces. The extension comes out of a prior agreement in which the WCB would act on behalf of both provinces from April 1,1999 through to December 31, 2002.

Each province has the right to review and/or terminate the shared arrangement. Ng believes that the agreement will be a positive move for stakeholders from both Nunavut and NWT.

"From both economic and service standpoints, the arrangement allows the WCB to continue to be a cost-effective organization," Minister Ng said. "The WCB is committed to reducing accidents in the workplace, but should an accident occur, it is also committed to providing quality rehabilitation and fair benefits to the injured worker."

Employers in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories currently pay the lowest average assessment rate in the country. Employees currently have the highest level of working benefits in Canada.
