Updating the Copyright Act
OTTAWA - The federal government has introduced a new report that looks at amending the Copyright Act to include the Internet and other digital technologies. The Act governs a wide variety of cultural industries such as publishing, music, and film.
A federal committee will review the report, entitled Supporting Culture and Innovation over the next year. Over the course of the year this group will be able to make recommendations for possible amendments to the Act. After this review is finished the report will be available for public consultation.
While federal law requires the Act to be reviewed every five years, there are not always amendments. Since the last review in 1997 the Internet and other new technologies have become a more widely used means of collecting and transmitting information. This latest revision will look at how these technologies can be protected.
The report can be found online at http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/rp00880e.html.
