Under serviced regions to receive high-speed Internet access

BRACEBRIDGE - The federal government is spending $105 million on a program that will bring high-speed Internet access to the under serviced regions of Northern Ontario. The Rural and Northern Development Pilot Program will target the First Nations, northern, remote, and rural communities.

A two step process will decide funding. In the first stage members of the target communities will submit a proposal for funding to develop a business plan. Successful applicants can get up to $30,000. The second step is to use the money to write and develop the business plan, which is then submitted to the selection committee for additional subsidies.

The recipients will be determined by the recommendations that the National Selection Committee makes to Industry Canada. The Committee members are expected to be named later this fall.
