Scam asks for loan interest in advance

TORONTO - Small business owners take heed, a company calling itself Sunlife Financial Trust Incorporated could be out to get your money.

The fictitious organization, not to be confused with the legitimate company Sun Life Financial Trust Inc., has been promoting itself as an alternative solution to people with bad credit ratings. The company has been collecting the first and last months' interest on these "loans" without ever granting the principal.

Business owners should also be on guard against other companies that resemble well known organizations. The ring may change its name from time to time to keep the scam going.

A warning has been issued to those involved with the scam by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada (OSFI). OSFI has compared this current money making scheme to the "Nigerian/African" advance fee scams that were circulating this past fall and winter.

OSFI has encouraged people with any more information on this scam to contact Phonebusters at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.phonebusters.com.
