North America's first aboriginally-owned winery opens

OSOYOOS - British Columbia is now home to the very first aboriginally-owned winery in North America. The winery was born out of a partnership between the Osoyoos Indian Band Development Corporation and leading wine producer Vincor International.

The winery, owned and operated by the Osoyoos Indian Band Development Corporation, is just one of the businesses expected to come out of a decade long plan to develop a "village style" resort in the region. To date the federal government has spent over $2.6 million on the project, and the final price tag is expected to reach $16 million upon completion.

The Nk'Mip (pronounced Inkameep) Desert and Heritage Interpretive Centre is housing the winery. The Centre will also focus on protecting and conserving the remaining 2700 acres of desert land left in Canada.
