Can GST paid on importing products be claimed back?

Expert: John R Mott

Brian asked:

I am in Ontario running an e-commerce business. When I import products from outside the country I pay GST on arrival into Canada. When I sell to an U.S. customer I do not charge GST. Do I get the GST I payed when importing back?

John R Mott answered:

If your business is registered for the GST, then you can claim back all GST that you pay on goods and services related to your business, including the GST that you pay on imported products. The fact that you are not collecting GST from your U.S. customers does not change this.
