Can GST be claimed for fuel purchases for owner/operator truck?

By John R Mott |

Christina asked:

My husband is a truck driver and recently became an owner/operator. He is leased to a company in Manitoba. I know we can claim the GST on things he purchases for his truck. My question is, can we claim all the GST he pays for the fuel he uses in his semi? He uses the company fleet cards, but at the end of the month he is charged for the fuel based on the invoices the company receives from the places where the cards were used.

John R Mott answered:

Your husband is entitled to claim HST input tax credits for any HST paid on fuel. He should ensure, however, that the company provides him with adequate documentation to substantiate the fuel costs, and the HST paid thereon.
