Finding Lost Files on Win 95 - XP

If you are looking for a misplaced file or folder, try using the Find function in Windows 95/98/NT to speed up your search.

To use Find, either click on the Start menu and scroll up to Find: Files or Folders – or click on your desktop* and hit the F3 key. Either one of these actions will bring up the Find: All Files search box.

For a simple search, enter the full or partial name of your document in the "Named" field, and click on the "Find Now" button. If you find that your searches are too broad, or result in too many possible matches, you can refine your searches using the "Date" and "Advanced" tabs.

Under the "Date" tab you can specify a date range, telling the computer to only search for matching files that were created or modified within the range that you specify. You can search for documents in the last day, few days, weeks, or months. You can also specify a specific week, month or other time range during a given year. This is handy when remember the general date that a file was created, but not the name of the document, as you can then do a search for the type of document (e.g. ".doc") to find all files of that type that were created in the specified time range.

Under the Advanced tab you can also specify a specific file type, and you can also specify the general file size of the document that you are looking for.

All of these functions can be very useful when you are struggling to find a misplaced folder or file.

*Note: if you have clicked on your desktop, be sure to change the "Look in:" folder to reflect all of the hard drives that you want to search, and not just the desktop.
