The year 2000 is rapidly approaching and there are simple steps you can take to get your hardware, software and data ready.
Microsoft recently sent out a notice to customers about their new Web site on year 2000 information and Microsoft software updates. Customers can download free year 2000 software updates that should keep Microsoft software running smoothly even when the millennium bug bites.
Industry Canada is also providing software in preparation for Y2K. "Check 2000" assessment software is available free of charge and will test the BIOS in your computer and tell you whether it will continue to set the date
and time accurately beyond January 1, 2000. Ironically, you can't get the program from the government website; to request a copy, call 1--800-622-6232 and tell the operator that you want a copy of Industry Canada's Check 2000. (The software was only designed for IBM compatible computers running Windows 95,98 or NT operating systems.)
It's important for small-business owners to think about all their computer equipment as the new millennium approaches. Make a checklist of all the equipment you own, then check the Web sites of the companies you bought your equipment from to see if Y2K information and upgrades are needed.
