A Step-by-Step Guide to Registering and Setting up a Domain Name

by Julie King and Kevin Jackson

Step 1 - Finding a Name

Researching names
Checkdomain – www.checkdomain.com - is one website that we often use to lookup many top-level domain names, including .com, .org., .net, .ca, and .cc names. Domain registrars also provide free lookup services for the names that they are authorized to resell.

A standard lookup service will tell you whether a name has been registered, and if it is registered it normally provides the name and contact information of the organization that has registered the name, including the last renewal date.
