Step 2 - Registering a Name
Selecting a registrar
The purpose of this article is to help you register a name that you can use for your email address – you@yourdomain.com. With that in mind, you have two choices when selecting a registrar:
- Register the name with a low-cost service that will hold the name for you (also known as "parking" your name), and pay a modest fee of about $10 - $20 per month to have email at your new address – you@yourdomain.com automatically forwarded to your current email address. Many ISPs offer this service, but investigate competitive pricing before signing on, as you may find a better service for less money if you shop around.
- Register your name with a web hosting provider, and set-up a basic web account that includes free email forwarding.
One of the problems with selecting a registrar is that there are too many options. Furthermore, the services offered by each registrar – services that you will likely need in the long run – vary greatly in cost and quality. Quite often pricing is difficult to determine before you have registered a domain, and what seems to be inexpensive initially may have relatively high back-end costs for services such as email forwarding. Some registrars have conditions associated with registration, such as hosting your domain name with that registrar for a minimum time period, while others do not.
Unless you are a fairly savvy Internet user, we highly recommend using a single company to register and host your domain. Once you are comfortable with the process you can move the domain name to another web hosting provider that might better suit your needs.
Properly researching all of the options for both registrars and hosting companies is a very involved process, so we have selected a few and have reviewed them here.
