A Step-by-Step Guide to Registering and Setting up a Domain Name

by Julie King and Kevin Jackson

Step 3 - Setting up your Account

Setting up your website
If you have opted to register an account that includes space for a website, your web hosting provider should email you instructions that explain how to access the space on one of their computers that has been set aside for your website.

This usually includes information needed to transfer files to their computer, the web server, also known as uploading files. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the easiest and most common way to transfer files from one computer to another. There are a variety of free and low-cost FTP software programs that you can use, which can readily be found at any shareware website, such as Tucows.

When files are properly uploaded to your web hosting account they will be accessible to others online that enter your domain name in their web browser. There are many details in this process, including the construction of a website, but that is the subject of another workshop!
