A Step-by-Step Guide to Registering and Setting up a Domain Name

by Julie King and Kevin Jackson

Step 3 - Setting up your Account

Sending and Receiving Email
The steps involved in setting up and receiving email addressed to your new domain will vary depending on the type of account you have selected. For example, if you have registered a name with Domain People and opted for unlimited email forwarding, you simply enter your current email address and some other basic information to activate the email forwarding. With this type of account the registrar will receive and automatically forward all email sent to your new address. If you have any problems you can always use the free technical support that is available.

If you opt to register a domain and activate an account, your web host should provide you with the information that you need to start receiving email. With this type of account your provider will collect and keep email for you, and you must then set up your email software to access the server that is holding your email in order to download the email to your computer. (Note: some accounts will also give you the option of reading your email online.)

Setting up your email software to collect mail is usually quite simple. With most programs you either create a new 'personality' (Eudora) or 'user profile' (MS Outlook Express). You would then include the information that the web host has provided you with – the User ID and password. Because you are likely using a different company to connect to the Internet (your ISP), you will need to enter the mail server name for your ISP in the outgoing mail field (typically smtp.yourisp.com).

It is not feasible for us to provide detailed instructions on how to change the email settings for all the email software programs that are available. Instead we will look at how to set up a new user profile for MS Outlook Express, the most commonly used email software.
