Starting a Mobile DJ Service in Ontario:

By Julie King |

Thomas asked:

I am 16 and want to become a self employed mobile DJ in Windsor, Ontario. Do I need to register or need to be licensed?

Julie King answered:

In Ontario you can start a business under your own name without being registered. However, if you plan to add anything to your name - for example Thomas's DJ Services - you need to register the name with the province.

That would register your business as a sole proprietorship. You may want to investigate the benefits of incorporation. (We have a number of articles on the topic of starting a business in our Starting a Business Guide.

Also, I would highly recommend that you visit the http://www.windsoressexsmallbusiness.com/.

They have free consultants on staff and can help you understand if there are any local permits or registration requirements that you will need for your business. There is a lot to think about when starting a business, and they will be able to help you with other things you might not have thought of at this point.
