Ontario company doing business in Alberta

Expert: Hank Bulmash

Alex asked:

My company has only one physical location, in Ontario. We do a lot of business in other provinces, most notably Alberta. We sell both hardware (physical product) and services. When it comes to taxes, do I charge Alberta residents just the GST, or both Ontario's PST and GST, or HST?

Hank Bulmash answered:

You base GST and HST on the location of the customer. That means you charge Ontario customers HST and Alberta customers just the five per cent GST.
