Should businesses charge charities GST for services provided?

Expert: Hank Bulmash

Wanda asked:

Do businesses charge non-profit organizations or charities for GST when billing them for a service or product?

Hank Bulmash answered:

Businesses providing goods or services to non-profits and charities do charge them GST/HST. The non-profit sector is subject to a complex body of rules that allows non-profits to get some of the GST they pay refunded to back to them. Those rules don't concern supplies to the non-profit sector. The non-profits themselves must deal with them. So when you provide services or products to a charity or a non-profit entity, you should charge GST/HST.
