Don't Go for a Back-up Drive - Go for a Back-up Solution

By CO Staff @canadaone |

Most businesses today rely on computers and computer data in their day-to-day operations. Many have bought back-up drives, one of the most popular back-up formats. But owning a drive, and having an effective back-up solution in place are two entirely different things.

Getting the right drive or system is the first step. You'll want to ensure that your drive has the capacity and the speed you need to do a regular back-up. Find a schedule that fits with the data demands of your business, and stick to it. Most drives have automatic scheduling, and it is useful to use this feature during off hours.

Once you have your back-up drive, you will need to implement a consistent program to ensure that your critical files are protected. Don't forget to back-up files that are in non-standard folders. Also, remember to back-up both email and faxes, folders that are often overlooked when people get started.

When you start backing up regularly, be sure to consider how you are going to protect your data in case of a fire or burglary. Off-site back-ups have become a must, and the real question is how regularly you should be moving your back-up tapes to an off-site location. Work out a location and schedule, and stick to it.

Preparing an effective back-up solution takes some forethought, but is worth it in the long run. When you experience your first full-scale hard-drive failure, you will be very glad that you took the time to protect yourself fully.
