Confusion of hits
When asking about a site's traffic, be sure to determine the number of 'pageviews' - not 'hits' - that the website gets.
Pageviews describe the number of times that a specific webpage has been loaded, while hits inflate this number.
A hit is generally
an entry logged by the Web server when a file is requested
- and can be any file, be it an HTML file, graphic, and so on. Therefore, a single page with 10 elements would be logged as 11 hits - 1 for the HTML page and another 10 for the various elements.
The
best measure of a site's actual traffic is a combination
of the number of visitors a day and number of pages viewed.

Not every position can be linked to a specific skill or area. And not every company has only one or two positions to advertise. How then, can you reach a number and variety of prospective employees online without using a number of different websites?
No problem. There is no lack of general job websites that reach a broad audience of potential hires.
Some of the general websites are free, but most charge fees. Those that charge might offer memberships for companies interested in posting more than one job on the site. Taking out single ads is also an option.
Due to the newness of the Internet, results might not always correlate with price.
When evaluating a general job website, ask yourself: what the site offers for its fees, who it reaches, how many visits it receives and what its track-record is for successful hires. Keep in mind that fees can be steep - in some cases hundreds of dollars for just one ad - so make sure you are getting your money's worth.
Be sure to be thorough in your evaluation when picking a place to advertise -- not all job sites are alike, they will offer different services. For example, not all sites offer a resume database or applicant pre-screening options. Be sure to ask about specifics and look out for hidden costs!
Making a list of pros and cons for each company you evaluate might help you decide which site makes sense for your company to use.
A Few Sites & Services . . .
Robert Porter, of marketing and developing at JobShark.com, tells of one tool the company makes available to its members.
"We have a full-resume management tool that is accessible for everyone that uses our service," he says. "The tool dramatically increases the efficiency of the administration of incoming resumes -- and we all know that time is money!"
A single posting on JobShark.com, which runs for 30 days, costs $575 plus GST. Posting packages, running from $2,500 and up plus GST, are also offered.
JobShark.com also offers employers access to its searchable database of over 400,000 resumes, charging $575 for two days of access, or $2,000 for a month's access.
If you're looking to spend a little less on your job posting, don't worry - prices vary. Look out though, those that charge less per posting could try to make up the difference by charging you for other services. As we looked at different Canadian job sites, we found it was necessary to look at all the variables - and to read between the lines - before we had a sense of the overall costs associated with a specific site.
Canadajobs.com gets an average of 380,000 visitors* a month, and charges $100 for a single, 60-day posting. Browsing through the accessible database will cost your company $300 a month.
Like Canadajobs.com, most online recruitment sources provide employers with the power to sift through any responses they might receive to their ad through the site.
Kim Peters, director of careers and employment online for Globe Information Services, boasts of what Workopolis.com (formerly known as GlobeCareers) offers their list of members.
"Workopolis.com offers recruiters and companies integrated tools which allow them to manage their candidate search within the site - privately," Peters says. "This includes things like easy-response management through shortlists of candidates and notifications when appropriate resumes are posted."
Workopolis.com gets 58 million pageviews* a month. Single postings are $500, and a resume database subscription is $6,000 a year plus GST. Monthly employer memberships are priced at $2,000 plus GST.
There are also those boards that offer their services free of charge. The Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) - a government-run service that matches employees and employers - Jobsonline.com - based in the U.S. - are examples of free job boards.
