If you find your teams flat footed when asked to brainstorm new ideas, the book The Business Playground may be just what you are looking for.

Co-authored by Eurythmics rock star David Stewart and branding expert Mark Simmons, the book colourfully - and we mean that literally - explores how to spark and use creativity to drive innovation in the corporate world.

With Stewart's background it is not surprising that many examples are drawn from the music world. The book features many industry examples and anecdotes along with excerpts from an interview with Mick Jagger. That is not to say, however, that the traditional business community has been overlooked. The authors also spoke to Microsoft's co-founder, Paul Allen, and uses examples from Nokia, Google, NASA and other large organizations.

An unusual addition to The Business Playground are a variety of "games" that illustrate things that tend to hold back ideas in the workplace. The first one is a snakes-and-ladders-style game where players need to overcome objections of middle-management to bring their idea to the CEO, who sits at the top of the board. When confronted with an obstacle along the path (for example, if you land on the "death by committee" space), you need to follow a specific set of instructions in a set time to avoid moving back down the board.

While peppered with a few odd anecdotes (like information on "trepanning" where some people have drilled small holes in their heads to improve their creativity), The Business Playbook nonetheless provides an excellent overview of the creative process.
