Association Profile: Canada China Business Council (CCBC)

By Michelle Collins |

The Canada China Business Council (CCBC) is a private-sector, non-profit membership organization created in 1978 to stimulate and support investment, technology transfer, and trade in goods and services. To achieve this mandate, the CCBC acts as a communication channel between governments in Canada and China.

The CCBC provides members with relevant information, research, and advice on marketing and trade promotion between Canada and China. The CCBC also offers translations and interpretation services at reduced rates for members.

"The CCBC has been recognized by both the Chinese and Canadian governments as the premier voice of the Canadian business community on matters of Canada-China relations. It is frequently asked to assist in organizing trade and investment missions in both directions," says Elizabeth Ablett, Director of Communications.

The CCBC works with the top levels of government in each country to assist with co-operative trade relations. The Prime Minister of Canada and the Head of the Chinese Government have spoken at the CCBC annual general meeting each year since 1994.

The CCBC also holds events, based on members' needs and demands. Events have included seminars, networking sessions, and business luncheons, with topics such as "Effective development of Chinese marketing materials" and "Enhancing cross-cultural negotiation skills."

Ablett says that companies can benefit from a membership with the CCBC because the potential for Canadian business in China is extensive, but learning the cultural and business practices that will lead to success in each country can be difficult.

Membership fees range from $1,500 for for businesses with under $10 million in profits per year to $7,500.00 for businesses with over $250 million in profits per year. Payment of fees is the only requirement for membership, and the CCBC welcomes members from all nationalities. CCBC offices are located in Toronto, Vancouver, Beijing, and Shanghai.
