New entrepreneurs often have a number of misconceptions about the availability of government grants. Yes, they do exist. However, there is no single place where one can go to apply for a government grant. Typically, grant programs have a specific purpose and target group. For example, there have been several programs in different areas of Canada to help young entrepreneurs start a business. These programs would often include training and a small weekly allowance. There are often regional programs as well. On the east coast, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is known for providing grants and loans to businesses, although the shift has been towards loans most recently.
To find a grant or loan program that can help you start a business, you'll need to become a bit of a detective and do a lot of sleuthing. Quite often online inquiries - to your local MP, MPP, and agencies such as the ACOA office in your area - will be more productive than searching for grant information online.
